PROJECT ONE - ANALYSING PASSIVE DESIGN STRATEGIES

OBJECTIVES

1. to identify and define the principles of heat tranfer in relation to building and people .

2. to understand what is thermal comfort and discuss factors relating to thermal comfort.

3. to analyse the effect of thermal comfort factors in a person and in a space.

4. To be able to criticize design of the space in terms of thermal comfort by referring to MS1525, UBBL and green mark standards.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Identify enrironmental conditions related to site condition, climate, etc.

2. Explain the effect of the sun on thermal performance of buildings

3. Explain the effect of insulation, thermal mass and air movement on thermal performance of building

PERSONAL REFLECTION

This project has definitely been eye opening in terms of understanding the principles of heat transfer and thermal comfort in relation to building, building location, people, and the details of the space. it has enhanced my knowledge in critizising certain aspects and features of building that never crossed my mind before. I have gained a thorough understanding of why site analysis is extremely important and that in a tropical country like malaysia, understanding these aspects of building is very essential to provide both the user and also the architect a more economical and sustainable output.

via this project, I have learnt a great deal of analysing and how to present recorded data. It has helped me to be more technical with my understanding of details of building structures with relation to sun orientation and wind paths. I have also enhanced my knowledge in softwares like revit and vasari which were very useful in obtaining and interpreting the data that we received earlier on from our site visit.

Revit played an important role in our shading analysis as it helped us to fully understand how and why the shading devices used in masjid ara damansara are so efficient and why the architects designed them in such aspects. It also visually showed us how the elimination of the shading devices could produce a chaotic user experience in terms of extreme sunlight and minimized shading. I have also used my knowledge in this software for my design studio and it has allowed me to be more confient in my design in terms of sustainability and understanding the responses of my design in relation to the designated site.
