ARCHI PORTFOLIO
BSC ( HONS ) ARCHITECTURE
BY MAHI ABDUL MUHSIN, 0314421
This module focuses on investigating historical works to enrich architectural design and ideas. Through the study of existing buildings, we are able to communicate and expand our own architectural vocabulary and develop design concepts. In a group of 4, we were required to conduct precedent study analysis on specific building through drawing, model-making, on-line forum discussion and verbal presentations. This precedent study analysis helped clarify the research question of “why” a specific building is historically, culturally and architecturally important, and “how” the design concepts derived from that particular building can be developed and expanded to be creatively and innovatively integrated into Studio 1 design projects.
PROJECT A - ONLINE GROUP FORUM
On-line group forum is used in this exercise as an effective virtual learning discussion platform for students to work as a team to help each other in exploring the precedent studies of a chosen building with cultural, historical and architectural significances.Through the active on-line discussion forum, students even outside class session will be able to exchange views, share and debate the knowledge derived from the precedent studies to best grasp as well as to encourage a comprehensive analysis of the underlying conceptual ideas of the building. This on-line forum discussion also prepared us for verbal presentation during Studio critic session.

THE FORUM WAS RUN IN GROUPS AND EACH STUDENT WAS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE AN ASSIGNED SET OF RESEARCH QUESTIONS. MINE ARE AS FOLLOWS;
WHO BUILT THE PARTHENON?
The parthenon was built by 3 famous figures of the 5th century, Ictinus, Callicrates and Phidias
PHIDIAS - Athenian sculptor ( flourished between 490 - 430 BC )
Roles in the construction of Parthenon.
- Artistic Director
- Designed and Supervised the overall sculptural decoration
- Sculpted the statue of Athena Parthenos ( Athena the virgin ) - gold and ivory sculpture of the Greek Goddess Athena. Athena was actually the goddess of WISDOM, MILITARY VICTORY AND CRAFTS. the sculpture was completed in 456 BC and stood on the Athenian Acropolis for all to see as the largest statue ever erected.
FUN FACT ; IT is believed that Phidias alone had seen the exact image of the gods Zeus and Poseidon and that he revealed it to man
Description of the Athena Parthenos
Dimensions: 38 feet high
materials : made of ivory and gold.
- On the middle of her helmet is placed a sphinx. ( human body with lion head figure )
- On her breast is a covering inspired by the head of Medusa made of ivory.
- She holds a statue of Victory on the right hand and on the other hand a spear
- at her feet lies a shield and near the spear is a serpent. This serpent is known to be Ericthonius, an ancient ruler raised by Athena
Where and when was the parthenon built?
- The parthenon was built on the Athenian Acropolis, Athens, Greece, in 447 BC
- The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel ( A FORTRESS PROTECTING A TOWN ) located on a high rocky outcrop above the city of Athens
- it was built to replace an existing temple which is historically named as Pre-Parthenon or Older Parthenon and was destroyed by the Persians in 480 BC.
- The work began under the orders of Pericles to show the wealth and exuberance of Athenian power. Like most Greek temples, the Parthenon was used as a treasury. In the 5th century AD, the Parthenon was converted into a Christian church dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

REFLECTIONS
This project has thoroughly helped me to creatively and innovatively develop and expand the design concepts derived from the precedent study analysis and apply it to the other modules. It has also been a thorough practice and understanding about ways to produce building analysis which document intentions, concepts, patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships. In addition to this, i have also enhanced my knowledge about methods of generating graphical documents, expansion and elaboration of intentions, concepts, patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships as integration to design projects.
PROJECT B & C - ANALYSIS PRESENTATION BOARD & 3D ABSTRACT MODEL

3D ABSTRACTION MODEL - THE PARTHENON
1. A compositional model of the building measuring under 30cm x 30cm x 10cm showing significant structure and details.
2. Understanding on the detail of architecture such as design concept, material used, hidden behind this building on that period of time.
3. Further structural understanding of analysis on the building through model making.
REFLECTION
The research and analysis via part B has allowed me to develop skills in Exemplifying, classifying and comparing the sequence of historical periods and how they are represented architecturally.I also learn ways to Differentiate many varied factors that contribute to the development of form and structures of historic buildings and even in modern architecture. In addition, it also taught skills to Produce building analysis which document intentions, concepts, patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships. Furthermore, it has enhanced my ability to Develop, elaborate and devise design concept by means of artistic, systematic, creative, and innovative intentions, concepts, patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships as integration with Studio 1 design projects.
