CULTURE & HISTORY 2

This module focuses on investigating historical works to enrich architectural design and ideas. Through the study of existing buildings, we are able to communicate and expand our own architectural vocabulary and develop design concepts. In a group of 5, we were required to conduct precedent study analysis on specific building through research, drawing, book compiling etc... This precedent study analysis helped clarify the research question of “why” a specific building is historically, culturally and architecturally important, and “how” the design concepts derived from that particular building can be developed and expanded to be creatively and innovatively integrated into Studio 2 design projects, as well as our future semesters.

This project gives the students the opportunity to work with a group of peers to investigate the Architecture of Modern Masters. The project is designed to increase students’ ability to analyse visual evidence with specific reference to Modern Masters as precedent studies.

Learning Outcomes

1. Increase understanding on the principle, ideas and contributing factors of the architecture of Modern Masters

2. Ability to analyse and identify specific architectural features in terms of space planning, technology, details, form and the aesthetics of the architecture of Modern Masters

3. Learn how to create understanding in your audience visually by composing factual information and descriptive sketches on a presentation board

THE BENESSE HOUSE, TADAO ANDO

PROJECT ONE - PRECEDENT STUDY

The individual component analysis is about answering the “what” questions to further understand the underlying concepts, philosophy and details of the Modern Masters. Each student was required to come up with analytical sketches to explain ONE internal aspects of the building such as: structure, materials, construction details etc... The section that i focused on is Components.

REFLECTION

This project has thoroughly helped me develop and expand the design concepts derived from the precedent study analysis and apply it to the other studio modules. It has also been a thorough practice and understanding about ways to produce building analysis which document intentions, concepts, construction details, architectural elements, patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships. In addition to this, i have also enhanced my knowledge about methods of generating graphical documents and applying it on a presentation board. This project has also increased my undertanding about my Chosen Architect and Why he uses certain techniques, materials and geometry in his architecture to communicate with the users of the space. Furthermore, it has enhanced my ability to Ability to analyse and identify specific architectural features in terms of space planning, technology, details, form and the aesthetics of the architecture of Modern Masters.

PROJECT TWO - WEB BOOK

Today, many historical modernist buildings face risk of being demolished to make way for more contemporary buildings. By recording and documenting the buildings for this project, we can contribute to preserve the historical evidence of the valuable Modern Architecture in Klang Valley. The findings for this project were to be compiled as a web book platform. Web book is a publication in digital form, consisting of text (report), images, or both.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Increase understanding on the principle, ideas and contributing factors of Modern Architecture in Klang Valley

2. Able to analyse and identify specific architectural features of Modern Architecture in Klang Valley

3. Able to document architectural heritage in the form of writings, descriptive diagrams and photography

4. Able to create a web book as a mean to publish academic materials

MUZIUM TELEKOM

Telekom Museum was built in the year 1928. Before it was a museum, it housed a central battery manual telephone exchange. With the development of Kuala Lumpur during the 1920s, the building played a significant role in relaying important information from one end to the other .

The National Telecommunicaiton Museum is housed in an impressive and elegant building with greek, mainly neo-classical architectural features. The gallery is divided into two sections, historical and modern gallery. The historical gallery displays relic ‘soundscapes ‘ that allow visitors to listen to level; the modern gallery shows the current telecommunications and technological evolutions and the prospects that are planned for the future

REFLECTION

This project has significantly Increased my understanding on the principle, ideas and contributing factors of Modern Architecture in Klang Valley. It was a very interactive and creative process to which we were ( as a group ) given the opportunity, to collect and compile data for this web book. In addition to this, I am now able to analyse and identify specific architectural features of Modern Architecture and have enhanced my knowledge about the specific building that we researched on, which is in integral part of the Malaysian Architectural history.

Another important skill i have gained is to document architectural heritage in the form of writings, descriptive diagrams and photography as well as compiling a web book as a mean of useful information source.

LAYOUT/CREATIVE PROCESS

This project has been a very interesting process as it allowed me to experiment and explore various Layouts and Designs and help my group mates to create something compatible. The Pages for the book are created using Powerpoint, which has served as a very useful and efficient mean of compiling and organizing our data. Below are some close ups of the Layout i have created for the web book and a glimpse at some of my pages from the individual task. A Lot of research was done prior to beginning designing the layout using the library as a source of inspiration, and also to give the book a touch of historical and neo-classical mood.
