REFLECTION
This project has taught me lessons and given me memories i will forever cherish. It was such a wonderful experience to have had the opportunity to work with my team members, who have shown unconditional enthusiasm and effort from the very beginning of the project till the very last submission. I feel very blessed to have worked with the team that i had the honour of working with, and i believe in each of their individual abilities as the reason for why, we were able to achieve a satisfying outcome via this project.
I have acquired some basic knowledge on furniture/shelf designing, and real-life problem solving skills via this project. The lecturers were helpful in aiding us with the design and giving us suggestions on how to reach out to the communities outside of our own campus. It was very encouraging of the lecturers to have given us the opportunity to pick our own organizations to work with, as it allowed us to explore and interact more with the people that were going to collaborate with, eventually leading to a better and full filling partnership and working relationship.
The greatest achievement for me via this project, are the gestures of appreciation and gratefulness I witnessed from the children and guardians at the orphanage. Little did they care about vast material possessions but accepted the little they had, with understanding, love and compassion. I feel utterly blessed for been given the opportunity to give back something for the children, from painting the mural on the trailer, to building the shoe racks and all the other DIY crafts that we all contributed. It has been a wonderful journey with the children , and i will always cherish the lessons they have taught me about the virtues of being kind, and being thankful for the little things we have.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. To increase awareness of current environmental issues locally
2. To induce creativity in attempting to explore the current environmental circumstances
3. To allow students to explore the opportunity to work with the community and for the community
4. To create awareness of the importance of creating and environmentally sustainable product/design/services
5. To be able to understand and explain the principles of sustainability from environmental and social perspective
PROJECT ONE- MY COMMUNITY , MY COMMITMENT
The main purpose of this project is to create environmental and community awareness and responsibility in architecture students about environmental sustainability and ways we, as students, can contribute to the community to make the environment a better and functionable place. We are to propose and execute an environmental based community project. My group and I chose to work closely with Trinity Orphange Children's school in collaboration with MENGO, a non-profit organization. This community related project aims to introduce the skills necessary to use our knowledge of design and nature as a tool for addressing challenges in sustainability. Through interactive and dynamic exercises, we have gained a thorough, and deeper understanding of environment and our responsibility to community, practice solving real-world challenges using creative ideas. This project presents the us with challenge linked directly to current pressing environmental issues globally. This exercise also trains the us to be more aware and considerate in selecting materials for our design.
